    What is the difference between a 1/4" and 1/2" nap roller?

    • @GoldenPaints
      @GoldenPaints 6 днів тому

      The nap size of a roller has to do with the length of the fibers themselves on the roller cover. A smaller size like ¼ will be best for smoother surfaces, where a ½ will have a bit more roller texture, which may be great on a textured surface that will accept the extra paint that is offloaded.

    Why did the brown umber loose its reddish quality with the addition of white? I don’t understand why that would happen. I would love to learn the science behind that. Thanks!

    • @GoldenPaints
      @GoldenPaints 6 днів тому

      Great question. White actually does two things, it will lighten the value of the color, but it also neutralizes the color as bit as well. White being such a high tinting strength color will often over power the subtlety of colors. With watercolor some of the most vibrancy will come from highly dilute transparent washes and glazes. This demo was to show that you could use white to add body or opacity to the colors as needed. Some folks like to do this with highlights for example. This article might be fun to look at. We are having some site issues at present, but this link should work soon once we get the site back online. justpaint.org/neutralizing-color/ Let us know if you have questions, help@goldenpaints.com

    When priming an HDF panel with 3 coats of gesso prior to oil painting, should one also paint all sides & back of the panel with gesso in order to mitigate the chances of the panel warping, or is this not necessary? Thanks in advance! 🙏

    I did paint pouring a while ago and couldn't easily buy a lot of the products commonly used in USA, so I substituted house paint a lot. we do have a local paint company that makes house paint in artist colours. The house paint thinned with glue and water made wonderful skins on silicon rubber sheets (sold as place mats for pets dishes). The skins lifted easily and do not stick to themselves so are easy to store. I always put the paint on the sheet by pouring and adding texture or marks with tools - I always had a thicker layer than you would get with brushstrokes. I have made collage landscapes among other things. I also covered a small notebook with one sheet and it is tough enough for that. I know it's a bit cheeky to gate-crash Golden's video, but if you're interested, you could use untinted base house paint coloured with Golden paints to make tougher skins. I should add - pour the paint onto your non-stick surface and tilt it to spread the paint around. If in doubt watch a paint pouring video to get the idea.

    • @GoldenPaints
      @GoldenPaints Місяць тому

      Interesting observations! We caution that many house paints are too brittle to be used on flexible supports. They are harder and less tacky, which is nice, but in cooler temperatures they will become fragile and vulnerable to cracking if flexed. Thanks for sharing!

    • @lobstermash
      @lobstermash Місяць тому

      @@GoldenPaints I find that house paint skins remain flexible in storage for about two years and then they do harden. But if they're are mounted flat as in collage they are fine. I did cover a notebook with quite a thick house paint skin about two or three years ago and it is still flexible when the book is opened and closed. I did use high quality paints - we have a local company that makes house paints in artist-like colours. Professional artists use them in large works. So I guess if anyone is interested to try it they should use a quality exterior paint.

    • @GoldenPaints
      @GoldenPaints Місяць тому

      Thanks for your questions! Acrylics are water resistant, but not waterproof. If you plan on using products where they will be getting constantly wet, we suggest using an exterior grade topcoat. Surfaces like metal, plastic, and glass are non-porous and should be prepared with an appropriate “bonding primer” - metals usually require primers called “DTM” or direct to metal. If you have additional questions, please send a note to our Materials & Applications Team at help@goldenpaints.com. They'd be happy to discuss your unique situation with you.

    I'm starting using aluminum panels for oil paintings, will the Golden gesso stick to aluminum well??

    • @GoldenPaints
      @GoldenPaints Місяць тому

      We typically recommend a commercial Direct To Metal (DTM) Primer on raw aluminum. The surface needs to be scuffed and degreased before primer. The Acrylic Gesso can go on after the DTM primer is dry to the manufacturers recommendations. If the aluminum is composite, such as DiBond, then we have found the Acrylic Gesso to have good adhesion to the white polyester surface typical for that material. It also needs to be scuffed and degreased prior to application. Here is an article about painting with acrylics on Dibond that you might find helpful: justpaint.org/painting-on-dibond/

    HA HA HA HA!!!! Well. This is a long post, but bare with me... Doesn't this just beat all. Five years ago (~2016-17) the internet was abuzz about how good it was to use GAC 100 to seal panels and canvas. Now, I have had extensive experience in using acrylics and oils together from my illustration days, and I know when and why oil cracks and why. I have also used acrylic over oil, and vice versa on many occasions. (None of my art has degraded to the point of being trash, but there are cracks in my work that appeared after the first five years, but none have suffered since, nearly thirty-five years later) To use oil over acrylic, the best hope for the medium is to use on panels, rigid support that will not flex. Second, to make sure the acrylic underlayers are dried at least two to three weeks prior to painting upon. Any Gloss medium is NOT a good candidate for any use under oil of any kind due to the nature of the gloss, as it shrinks profoundly during the first few days, and even as long as one month into its life on the canvas. Oil is not a fast reactionary medium, and after it sets up, it will become hard, and only have a certain amount of flex. You call it a "phenomenon" but it is happening due to the shrinkage of the acrylic under the oil that is dried, and a immobile layer underneath. I am not entirely sure if the oil is activating something in the acrylic to allow it to move, or is reaction of off gassing from the acrylic itself due to the solvents in the oil, or if it due to ongoing acrylic off gassing which might be related to gloss. Your tests (I assume) have only been going on for about a year thus far for GAC 100 and acrylic underpaintings, so you have not the longer term effects of these samples. I believe some ill effects will happen in the far reaching future- say about 80 years plus... But these effect are not something I look at to be that much of an issue, as any decent restorationist can mitigate with little skill or trouble. A fast setting oil ground is more brittle than a linseed oil paint film, and therefore be more susceptible to cracking that just regular oil paint. But do you think any of these fact were received by anyone on UA-cam? HELL NO. I got blasted by everyone in the comments, along with the content creators. My recommendations follow very close to what you are saying here, the usage of sandable mediums is completely fine. The reason for this is the additive within these mediums because they generally embolden the rigidity and strengthen the acrylic, along with being a strata that will not flex within the medium of the acrylic paint layer, this above all else minimizes the movement of that acrylic, WHILE allowing the rapid off gassing of the acrylic due to the broken surface tension in the paint film itself. Without the chalk, the plaster, (gypsum) pumice, marble dust, titanium dioxide and god knows what some put into their gesso's, the acrylic will be at risk of cracking any thinner, fast drying oil layer. The flex of that oil layer is the key to its survival. I tend to believe the longer term cracking of oil will happen as the oil ages over top of acrylics, far into the future. Acrylic does lose integrity as it ages, and this is not negotiable to conditions. It will become almost void over time. I have seen paint in some houses that is over forty years old that simply shriveled up under topcoats of paint, leaving a gap of around one millimeter under corner areas of paint. (The thicker areas of paint) In a layer of an oil painting, this is more than significant for delamination to occur in gloss acrylics, and in thinner acrylic coating cause cracking of the oil paint. Gesso's and primers do not follow this same fate, for the aforementioned additives. However, cheaper flat paints do not contain enough acrylic medium to bind over a longer time frame, and this is another such problem artist should watch out for, trying to save money by using cheap flat paint as a primer or in place of gesso. These are a few of my musings of the past ten years, after having done many of the things (successfully, I might add) that people say not to do.

    • @chrisgriffith1573
      @chrisgriffith1573 Місяць тому

      As a follow up to this, (getting into the tail end of this video when you show gesso over GAC 100 or gloss acrylic) The barrier of three coats of gesso over gloss will not save the longer term effect of the underlying layer of acrylic. The problem will still exist, with lessoned effects from the ability of another acrylic layer overtop, but the ongoing issues with gloss acrylic still exist. In 40-60 years, that layer will be a liability to the painting. There will be a point at which the gloss will not support the gesso, and this will be a major issue for the painting. I recommend a PVA glue layer, followed by a mix of PVA and chalk, gypsum and pumice, reduced from that of what is used for gesso, two coats, followed by the full gesso mix, two layers. Each of these layers is sandable, and will give a huge latitude for control of that surface. The gesso can be toned any way the artist likes, but gypsum and chalk are key to enhancing the longevity of that layer for the painting. I am fairly sure this technique will out last the wood panel it is painted upon.

    Wanted to ask few question, does golden super matte medium can be mixed with standard heavy body? Question number two is, can golden super matte medium work as coating like varnish? Thaanks in advance!

    • @GoldenPaints
      @GoldenPaints Місяць тому

      Yes, Super Matte Medium can be added to any of our paint lines to reduce the sheen of the paint. Super Matte Medium is so high on matting solids, that it’s not recommended to be used by itself. It’s best to add it to paints or mediums to reduce sheen. You could blend Super Matte Medium with small amounts of Fluid Matte Medium, but the matting solids in Super Matte Medium create a hazy film.

    How long does it take for the OPEN to dry on a gel plate?

    • @GoldenPaints
      @GoldenPaints Місяць тому

      Paint residues on a gel plate can be a very thin layer, which might dry a little faster than a paint film that was applied by brush, for example. While brush stroke-thick paint layers remain wet for 1-2 hours on a non-absorbent surface, paint residues after mono printing on a gel plate can set up after maybe 15 minutes. You still have more time to clean the plate, but it’s best to wipe the gel plate with a damp cloth after about 15- 20 minutes.

    I just got some of these for wargame miniatures but the instructions suggest I shouldnt touch the paint. Is it ok to touch if I seal it with a Matte spray? My kids will be handling finished miniatures so i just want to make sure they are safe once sealed. I know this is probably a "duh" moment but my paint knowlage is miniscule at best and I wont risk it till I know for sure. Ive tried searching the internet and can identify specific compounds now but I find absolutely nothing on the matter if its ok to touch when sealed with matte uv clear spray. Again I know this is probably a "duh" moment but I just cant risk my kiddos. 🙂

      We recommend to not use any cadmium pigments on objects that will be handled. A clear sprayed topcoat you are comfortable using should be fine for private use. In terms of aesthetics, any topcoat will change the appearance of the SoFlat Matte paints, usually shifting color values and making them a little darker and more saturated. Even matte varnishes tend to increase the sheen on the SoFlat Matte colors. Ideally, test the topcoat on a sacrificial surface.

    Which of the clear/transparent gel skins do you think would make the best substrate for laser printing onto? I want to apply a skin to an A3 size plastic sheet, print an image onto that skin and then peel it off. Thanks!

    • @GoldenPaints
      @GoldenPaints 2 місяці тому

      A3 is very large for an acrylic skin and might be hard to control and handle. Acrylics are typically flexible and can stretch when handles, especially in thin skins. You might want to use a thin fabric to reinforce the skin structurally. If you want to run the acrylic skin through a regular printer, you want to make sure the skin is as thin as possible. Our Pouring Mediums might be the best choices for creating large smooth skins. Here is an article where we describe our experiments with running acrylic skins through inkjet printers: justpaint.org/realizing-the-possibilities-of-digital-transfers-acrylics/ We no longer make the Golden Digital Grounds, but you can get similar products from InkAid.

Daniel Smith and Schmincke just dry down poured paint the same as their tube, and I’m wondering what the benefit of this additional process is? I know that with Winsor and Newton there’s a better colour pay off and ease of re-wetting with their extruded pans as opposed to just filling pans from their tubes and letting them dry. I think some concern was mentioned on other channels about the rougher texture of the new pans that it might be harder wear and tear on brushes. Any comments you have to make would be appreciated. I am considering buying the mini set of 12 as I’ve seen such good reviews of it.

      Great question! We still use Aquazol for the new QoR pans and the objective of this new process is a more uniformly filled pan. The rougher texture disappears and is smoothed as soon as water touches the surface. In our testing we have not seen any difference on brush longevity. We do not require extra binder as we use a lot of pressure to form the pans. Payoff is very high as the pans have a little bit of surface porosity and we’ve heard very positive comments about ease of rewetting. We use an optimized formula for watercolor pans that is different from the tube formula only in that the tube formula has some slow drying additives to assist artist who use QoR wet out of the tube not dry out too fast on the palette - these are not required in the pan form.
